IRISH PATENTS OFFICE

Irish Patents Office“I worked most of my career in Dublin and my commute from the suburbs into the city centre ran for somewhere between an hour and an hour and 45 minutes each way. In Kilkenny, my commute is 5 minutes – a huge advantage to me. It’s two and a half hours extra every day for me and my family”. Eamonn Laird, Controller of Patents, Irish Patents Office

The role of the IPO is the protection of industrial property rights in the fields of patents, trademarks and designs, and the dissemination of relevant information in conjunction with each of these activities. Through the provision and administration of the patents, trademarks and design registration systems, the Office assists Irish business, industry and individual entrepreneurs to optimise the economic potential of their intellectual property.

The Irish Patents Office services Ireland’s commitments to the European Patents Office (EPO), the European Trademark Office (OHIM) and the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) from its headquarters in Kilkenny. Based in the city since decentralisation from Dublin in 1998, the IPO employs 60 people.
