In 2012 an ICT Research and Innovation Centre based was established at St. Kieran's Campus Kilkenny City, by Waterford IT's TSSG (Telecommunications Software & Systems Group)/ArcLabs which adds to the attractions of Kilkenny as a base for ICT companies. The TSSG is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence in next generation internet and mobile services, and has become one of the leading research and development hubs in Europe. Key research areas include automatic network and service management with a focus on the next generation of networks and services, including the IP-based infrastructure, services, especially mobile services, and the enabling software systems.

 

In its first 9 months in operation, the centre created 15 engineering jobs and proposals are progressing to expand to a larger facility in the city at the new Abbey Creative Quarter at the Smithwick's Brewery siteThis facility will in turn act as a hub for next generation internet development for companies in the finance, banking, and agribusiness sectors and will act as a catalyst for attracting multinational industries, high potential startups and entrepreneurs to the region.

 

Kilkenny City has 20 hectares of zoned industrial technology park, and 120 hectares of zoned business park available for immediate development, all of which is serviced by high capacity fibre optic network. Three third level facilities within 30 minutes drive produce 3,500 graduates per annum and there is a catchment population of 498,000 within 60 km of Kilkenny City.
